Real Life Machine
The John Deere Model B was manufactured from 1935 to 1952 and became one of the most successful tractors in John Deere's history. Introduced as a smaller, more affordable alternative to the Model A, the Model B was designed for farmers who needed a dependable row-crop tractor for cultivating, planting, mowing, and other everyday agricultural operations.
The Model B featured John Deere's famous horizontal two-cylinder engine, known for its distinctive exhaust sound and simple, durable construction. Early tractors used an approximately 149-cubic-inch engine, while later versions received larger engines and numerous mechanical improvements. Depending on production year and configuration, the Model B generally delivered approximately 12 to 28 horsepower at the belt or PTO.
One of the tractor's most recognizable configurations was its narrow-front design, which positioned the front wheels close together. This arrangement made the Model B particularly useful for row-crop farming, allowing operators to cultivate between planted rows while maintaining good maneuverability in fields and around farm buildings.
Throughout its production run, the Model B underwent several important updates. Early unstyled versions featured exposed mechanical components and a simple appearance. In 1939, John Deere introduced styled sheet metal designed by industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, giving the tractor a more streamlined hood and grille. Later improvements included updated transmissions, electrical equipment, and operator conveniences.
Farmers appreciated the Model B for its fuel efficiency, straightforward maintenance, dependable two-cylinder engine, and versatility. It could operate a variety of implements, including mounted cultivators, moldboard plows, planters, sickle mowers, and other equipment commonly used on small and medium-sized farms.
More than 300,000 Model B tractors were produced during its manufacturing history, helping establish it as one of John Deere's most recognizable and widely collected vintage tractors. Its familiar green and yellow styling and distinctive two-cylinder sound remain closely associated with traditional American farming.
The Two-Cylinder Club is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the history of John Deere two-cylinder tractors and related agricultural equipment. Its Expo events bring together collectors, restorers, and enthusiasts to showcase historic machinery and share their appreciation for John Deere's agricultural heritage.
The 2015 Two-Cylinder Club Expo XXV commemorated the organization's 25th Expo event. This special-edition Model B collectible celebrates both the tractor's important place in agricultural history and the continuing enthusiasm for preserving vintage John Deere equipment.
