The International Harvester 3788 was manufactured from 1980 through 1981 as part of the company's innovative 2+2 Series of articulated four-wheel-drive tractors. Introduced to provide farmers with the traction advantages of four-wheel drive while maintaining the versatility of a row-crop tractor, the 2+2 design represented a unique approach to agricultural engineering. Unlike conventional articulated tractors, which typically positioned the engine behind the front axle and the operator near the articulation point, the International Harvester 2+2 placed the engine ahead of the front axle and the cab over the rear section of the machine.
The 3788 was powered by an International Harvester DTI-466 turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine with approximately 466 cubic inches of displacement, producing around 170 horsepower at the power take-off. Its articulated four-wheel-drive system distributed power to all four wheels, providing improved traction for demanding field operations such as plowing, disking, cultivating, and pulling large agricultural implements.
One of the tractor's most recognizable characteristics was its unusually long front hood, which earned the 2+2 tractors the nickname "Anteaters" among farmers and equipment enthusiasts. This distinctive arrangement allowed the operator to sit farther back on the tractor while maintaining the maneuverability provided by articulated steering.
International Harvester developed the 2+2 concept to bridge the gap between conventional row-crop tractors and larger four-wheel-drive machines.
