The Allis-Chalmers HD-21 was a large crawler tractor built for heavy-duty work in agriculture, land clearing, and construction. Crawler tractors use tracks rather than conventional wheels to provide traction and support on soft or uneven ground. With a suitable drawbar and implement, machines of this class could pull large tillage tools, including disk harrows, across heavy soils and crop residue. An offset disk harrow cuts and mixes the soil with angled gangs of disks, helping incorporate residue and prepare ground for later field operations. Large crawlers were valued for their pulling ability and versatility before modern high-horsepower articulated tractors became widespread.
