The John Deere 4020 was produced from 1963 through 1972 as part of the company's New Generation tractor lineup. It became one of the most successful tractors of its era, with more than 184,000 units produced across its various engine and chassis configurations. The 4020 Diesel was powered by a 404-cubic-inch, six-cylinder diesel engine and delivered approximately 84 horsepower at the drawbar and 96 horsepower at the power take-off in official testing. Farmers relied on the 4020 for plowing, planting, cultivating, pulling heavy implements, and operating PTO-driven equipment. Its available eight-speed Syncro-Range transmission and optional full Power Shift transmission gave operators choices to suit different field conditions and workloads. The wide-front configuration provided a stable platform for row-crop farming, while dual rear wheels could improve traction and distribute weight across the soil. Rollover protection structures added an important safety feature for operators. The 4020 became especially popular for its useful power, dependable six-cylinder engine, versatility, and practical design, helping establish John Deere as a leader in modern farm machinery.
